Publication of Jewish Community of Long Island, the story of Long Island’s Jewish heritage, has brought earlier histories of Long Island's Jewry into a new perspective through a photographic journey. Jewish life on Long Island reflects the transition from an agricultural region to the suburban dream. The research reflects the roles of peddlers, local businesses, synagogues, social organization, individuals and families.  Social history is an important part of genealogical research and much of this book was researched and written from a genealogical perspective. The written text takes the reader through the historical changes on Long Island through use of genealogical material, such as draft registrations, census, and records from the National Jewish Welfare Board. Jewish Community of Long Island shows how genealogical research can augment historical data to create a richer narrative.


Rhoda Salowe Miller, Ed.D., CG® has been a Certified Genealogist since 1998. She is a Past President of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island and continues her leadership as a board member. With JGSLI, Rhoda is co-author of Jewish Community of Long Island. She is also a contributing author to the New York Family History Research Guide and Gazetteer. She is a presenter at conferences and other venues. Under Litvak SIG, Rhoda volunteers as Co-coordinator of the Svencionys District Research Group, administers a Svencionys DNA group, and is webmaster of the JewishGen KehilaLinks Orlya, Belarus website. At Dowling College, Rhoda has taught genealogy and Holocaust courses.
